Approval alerts can be quite many and this can get frustrating for the user.
The following details a possible solution for the same

Please Note that this is only possible in version 10 where we have the functionality of Substitute Approver for Approval Templates.

Steps:

1.  Create a dummy user i.e. S001
2. Set that user dummy user(S001) as an Alternative Approver of the default approver (who you don’t want them to get the alerts in the messages/Alerts box)

          NB: The alternative Substitute Approver for Approval Template template needs to be active. You                        can give it a validity of upto 50 years + . The idea is, you want it to always be active.

    3.   When the originator generates a document, the dummy user will be the one receiving the                   alerts/messages box but the default Approver will not. However, the default approver can still Approve  the same documents sent Using the approval decision report/Approval Status report
