I am Finally Acne Free!

November 8, 2018

Let me start by saying that I am happy, like really happy. My face is finally acne free. For two months now, I have not had a single breakout. It is not perfect, but I like what I see when I look in the mirror. I still have black spots here and there from my previous breakouts but they are barely visible. I have a feeling that things are only getting better as far as my skin is concerned.

People who know me are aware of my struggle with acne. I have struggled with acne for as long as I can remember. Acne managed to suck the life, confidence and self-esteem out of me. Literally. I never used to go out with friends or on dates as much. I felt ugly.  Most of the times I would rather sleep or Netflix than have people look at me that way. And even the times I managed to go out, I would have to wear heavy make up to cover my ‘imperfections’. There is nothing wrong with makeup but I don’t like being a slave to it or depending on it like that. I wanna wake up in the morning and just go. I want to feel beautiful- with or without makeup.

Almost every morning I would wake up to say hello to the newest member(s) of my face – pimples, cysts, and blackheads. You name it. It was terrible. painful. I felt defeated. I tried everything. From visiting expensive dermatologist’s(Ksh. 4000 consultation fee) to going to Riverroad for ‘mkorogos’.  Let me tell you about Riverroad ‘mkorogos’. They don’t prevent new breakouts, they only help clear out the black spots that are left after you bust a pimple. And they do this by bleaching the black spot. This is good but it interferes with your natural color because there is an element of bleaching that comes with it. For me they made me a little lighter than I am naturally.

I tried changing my diet by eliminating dairy and fatty foods like blue band and eggs. Still, nothing. They say water helps, so even that you can be sure as hell I gave it my best shot. Even bought a water bottle. All this and I still got new breakouts. I think the longest I have stayed without breaking out is six days.

So What is it That I Did?
My friend Christine Kinuthia, introduced me to one skin specialist (Who has also helped her with her own  skin) from Westlands called Bina. Apparently most if not all her patients have great skin. Gave her a call on a Saturday(18/8/2018) and went to see her for consultation. She doesn’t’ charge a consultation fee. You should have seen how confident she was when she told me, ‘Your are going to be okay’. Well, they all say that but there was something about this one. Something sincere. She wasn’t in it just for the money. She sounded emotionally invested in seeing my pain go away. She suggested an laser extraction procedure that would cost me Kshs. 5000. You know what? At this point, I was at a state where for my skin I would pay anything. I would work day and night to be able to afford any procedure that would help cure my acne. If you haven’t’ suffered acne you wouldn’t understand …. so don’t try to. And don’t try to tell me that I am beautiful the way I am.

Anyway,  I made an appointment the following Saturday(25/8/2018) and had the laser procedure done. It lasted about an hour. She also advised me to be apply the colorless methylated spirit twice a day on my face – something I have been doing religiously.

Like I said before, it’s been about two months without new breakouts. Maybe it’s still early to celebrate or maybe the procedure did actually do the trick. Only time will tell, but for now am good. In a few days, I plan to visit Bina for a second round of the procedure. She said I need three.

If you are out there struggling with your skin, and you’ve probably tried everything and nothing seems to be working, maybe you should also give this a shot. You never know!
